John Stott’s The Cross of Christ (1986) is one of the most important books on the cross to be written in recent decades. Recently re-issued by IVP, it displays a firm grasp of the Bible's teaching and deep reflection on a range of theological and pastoral issues, and has deservedly come to be regarded among evangelicals as one of the standard texts on the cross. Available directly from IVP HERE or from Amazon above.

Mark Meynell’s Cross Examined (2001) sets the cross in the broad context of the doctrine of salvation and the Christian life. Drawing on the author’s experience of communicating the gospel to university students, it covers a range of biblical, theological and pastoral themes in a highly accessible style. Available directly from IVP HERE or from Amazon above.

Liam Goligher’s The Jesus Gospel (2006) started life as a series of sermons. This easy-to-read book presents the story of the Bible as a drama in three acts, demonstrating clearly and simply the centrality of penal substitution. Available from Amazon above.

John Piper’s Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die (2006) is a thought-provoking collection of meditations on this key biblical theme. Easy to read yet worth reflecting on long and hard, it is available from Desiring God Ministries HERE or from Amazon above.

C. J. Mahaney’s Living The Cross-Centered Life (2006) is an outstandingly helpful guide to living a life shaped by the gospel. Full of pastoral insight, it is available directly from Sovereign Grace Ministries HERE or from Amazon above.

Where Wrath and Mercy Meet (2001), edited by David Peterson, is a collection of papers presented at a conference on the atonement held at Oak Hill College, London. It contains scholarly essays on the atonement in the Old and New Testaments, theological studies relating the doctrine to creation, new creation, sin, guilt and punishment, and some reflections on preaching the atonement. It makes a strong case for penal substitution, and responds to several recent challenges. Available from Amazon above.

Leon Morris’s The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross (1955) is a classic study of the atonement, discussing in detailed important biblical terms and concepts such as ‘redemption’, ‘propitiation’ and ‘reconciliation’. Recently re-issued, it is available directly from IVP HERE or from Amazon above.

Robert Reymond’s The Lamb of God (2006) traces the theme of sacrifice through the Bible, offering helpful treatments of Exodus 12, Leviticus 16 and Isaiah 53 in particular. Available from Amazon above.

The Glory of the Atonement (2004), edited by Charles E. Hill and Frank A. James III, is a substantial collection of scholarly essays on the atonement, written in appreciation of the ministry of Roger Nicole. It contains studies of some relevant biblical material, as well as essays from historical and practical perspectives. Nicole himself contributed a ‘Postscript on Penal Substitution’, which by itself does a great deal to clarify the issues involved. Available directly from IVP HERE or from Amazon above.

John Murray’s Redemption Accomplished and Applied (1955) is a classic study of the Reformed doctrine of the atonement, and resoundingly endorses penal substitution. Available from Amazon above.
